Mountain View Hosts Battle Ground In Home Opener

VANCOUVER, Wash. (September 12, 2016) – The Mountain View Thunder will take on the Battle Ground Tigers in the Thunder’s first home game of the season this Friday afternoon, Sept. 16, at McKenzie Stadium.

The Thunder are ranked No. 11 in the state in the latest 3A MaxPreps poll after a tough loss to the Union Titans. Mountain View now sits with a 1-1 record, as the Thunder beat Ferris 32-13 in their season opener.

Mountain View is led by sophomore wide receiver/defensive back Darian Chase, who is averaging 150 receiving yards per game and has three interceptions in 2016. Chase has recorded three receiving touchdowns and returned one interception for a touchdown.

Junior running back Junior Perry leads the team with 172 rushing yards this season (avg. 86 ypg) and has scored one touchdown. Sophomore Jack Mertens has racked up 108 yards and another sophomore, Nile Jones, has pitched in 85 yards.

Senior quarterback Andre Scheer has thrown for 333 yards with three touchdowns through the first two contests.

Battle Ground is ranked No. 6 in the latest 4A poll with a pair of home victories to begin the season over two Oregon schools – Beaverton and Tualatin. The Tigers are coming off an eight-win season, as Battle Ground advanced to the state playoffs and lost their first round game in 2015 to finish with an 8-3 record.

The Thunder and Tigers have squared off 26 times since their first meeting in 1985, with the Thunder holding a 19-7 overall record. Battle Ground beat Mountain View in 2015 for the first time since 1996. Between 1997 and 2014, the Thunder won 14 straight matchups, playing every season from 1997 to 2009 and then again in 2014. Mountain View is 10-4 in the series at home.

Friday’s matchup is scheduled to kick off at 4:30 p.m. and will begin a three-game home stand for the Thunder, as Mountain will host Skyview on Sept. 23 and Hudson’s Bay for  Mountain View’s Homecoming game on Sept. 30.
